For starters, try the aubergine and parma ham bake. Thin layers of aubergine are pan-fried in a little olive oil, smothered in a fresh tomato sauce and topped with buffalo mozzarella and parma ham. The delicate flavour of the aubergine is perfectly complemented by the salty ham.
The restaurant is famous for fresh past. Try the pappardelle with spicy sausage in tomato sauce with fresh basil. The freshly made pasta turns this simple dish into a memorable treat.
This restaurant on the well-known Delaire Graff wine estate delivers pan-Asian food with contemporary flair. You might opt for the chef’s signature menu, but the à la carte menu also holds treasure, like an intensely fragrant mussel laksa elevated by the interesting addition of whelks. The clear winner of the day is the sweet and smoky Thai barbecue pork belly served with shiitake sausage and charred onions. It’s a marvel of flavours and textures, rich and indulgent – just like the setting. Also noteworthy is the Thai poached cob, featuring lots of spice, thanks to a fragrant green curry sauce. The options are vast here at the younger sibling of Café del Sol, our 2012 winner of Best Italian Restaurant, offering everything from nibbly bits (olives, biltong and berries) to serious fare such as a 400g beef T-bone tagliata with porcini trifolati, fresh black-truffle butter and triple-cooked chips.
Appetisers range from salt-and-pepper squid heads with lime, roasted garlic aioli and black salt to grilled bruschetta topped with combinations like salmon and cream cheese or gorgonzola, strawberries and olive tapenade. The selection of main courses include black-sesame-crusted salmon with avocado mash, Campari and fresh grapefruit salsa with a vanilla and sweet chilli sauce, or a polpette burger with fontal cheese, caramelised onion, streaky bacon, sundried tomato relish and rocket.
Acclaimed for its carnivorous concept, Carne SA is where you should be eating meat. Chef-patron Giorgio Nava makes a huge effort to greet everyone and give recommendations. His restaurants are in a league of their own. At Carne SA, steak cuts are presented on a platter and explained in detail. You can sense that everything is done for the love of meat, sourced and prepared with care, but the ambience is also welcoming and sophisticated. There are several classic Italian dishes and delicacies like sweetbreads on the menu, and an excellent wine list is complemented by knowledgeable staff. Highlights: the 1.2kg T-bone; ravioli filled with slow-baked lamb shoulder, sage butter and parmesan; sweetbreads with artichoke mash; prime rib on the bone; hanger steak; La Fiorentina (for two to share); the bresaola with lemon juice and olive oil; and Karoo lamb with sautéed spinach.
